SET OF 3 CERAMIC VASES CHULUCANAS

Chulucanas is a town in Piura - Peru. The town is famous for its pottery. Originally dating from pre-Inca times it is today exported all over the world. The technique for making this unique pottery, involving only the use of the artisan’s hands and feet, stone and wooden tools, dates back to Pre-Columbian times. These techniques have their roots with the Vicus culture of Northern Peruand have existed for over 2000 years. The skills have been passed on from family member to family member for generations. Once a piece is molded by hand, the baking process is carried out in several stages. Smoke from burning wood and mango leaves creates a black color on the piece except on the areas which have been covered by a glaze and mud mixture. Once the pieces have been fired, they are polished by rubbing them with a fine stone. This polishing completes the process and gives each piece a matte to semi-gloss finish.

THINKER CERAMIC STATUE

Pre-Columbian vessels made with a negative smoke resist technique were found in burial sites of the Vicus culture in this area. Unfortunately, this technique had been lost over the centuries. In the late 1960's, several local potters, with the help of a few interested supporters in the area, founded a group called Sanoc Camayoc, or Masters of Clay. The goal of this group was to rediscover the pre-Columbian techniques that had been used by their ancestors in the area. Through many trials and errors they discovered the technique used to create the black-on-white and white-on-black patterns. The hallmark of Chulucanas pottery is the black, which is not painted, each pieces is made by hand-turning. A wooden paddle and smooth stone are used to thin the pieces. After this, a base coat of clay and mineral oxides are applied to the pieces and they are burnished and fired. The pieces are often repainted in the areas where the base color is to be retained.

Chulucanas Ceramic Sculptures

These charming statuettes depict a couple from Chulucanas dancing. The man wears a pink shirt with green t-shirt while the woman wears a typical dress. We use an ancient ceramic technique for these figurines, polishing them with a river stone. They receive their dark coloration from the smoke of mango leaves. Ceramics such as these are entirely unique from Peru. Thus slight variations of color or brushstrokes confirm their originality and authenticity.
